TID #157 Oaths and Truthful Speech

What’s up TRC and Friends! Today we take a look at Jesus’ next bit of instruction on how to seek his kingdom and his righteousness. This one is hard for me, and trust you’ll feel and hear that struggle as we try to be precise as Jesus calls us to be.
Give it a listen or watch right here:
In Matthew 5:33-37, Jesus addresses the critical importance of truthful speech in making oaths. Jesus’ instruction reveals fundamental truth about God’s standard of righteousness and how Christians should approach their words and commitments.
What Did Jesus Say About Oaths?
Jesus taught that rather than making elaborate oaths, we should simply let our “yes be yes” and our “no be no.” He warned against the practice of making oaths by heaven, earth, Jerusalem, or even one’s own head, explaining that anything beyond a simple yes or no “comes from evil.”
Why Does Truthful Speech Matter to God? Jesus reveals several important aspects about God’s view of truthfulness:
- Our words matter deeply and reflect our heart condition.
- Simple truthfulness should characterize God’s people.
- Elaborate oaths often mask deception or ulterior motives.
How Should Christians Approach Truth-Telling? The Christian ethic of truthfulness includes:
- Speaking with precision and clarity.
- Avoiding ambiguity and deception.
- Being trustworthy in all circumstances.
- Recognizing that our words represent Christ.
- Understanding that excessive words often mask underlying issues.
What About Difficult Situations? While the principle is clear, application can be complex in certain scenarios:
- Situations involving protecting others from harm.
- Professional confidentiality requirements.
- Parental discretion with children.
Life Application
This week, consider these questions and challenges:
Are there areas where you’ve become casual with truth-telling?
Do you find yourself making elaborate explanations when simple yes/no would suffice?
How well do your words align with your actions?
Challenge: Practice precise, truthful speech this week. When asked something, respond with clear yes/no answers when possible. If you catch yourself being untruthful, immediately correct it and ask forgiveness. Remember that your words represent Christ to others.
